The end result incorporated sand settling lanes and weep cells, something they had never seen done before.

Whittle Farms is a 500-cow family dairy farm. It is owned and operated by Tom and Cheryl Whittle and their children: Mike and his wife, Hollie; Deb and her husband, Lanny Deitchler; and Pat.

My grandparents were dairy farmers and I grew up showing registered Holsteins and Guernseys in 4-H and open shows across Washington State.

Since coming to WSU in 2006, I have been very involved in all of the dairy programs, including Cooperative University Dairy Students, Dairy Challenge and served as Dairy Club president last year.

Southwest summer dairy program undergoes expansion PDF Print E-mail

1110pd_martinez_southwest_2During recent years, many universities in the Southwest started closing their dairy herds, a fact that sparked a definite need for a program focused on educating students interested in pursuing careers in advanced large-herd dairy management.

The Southern Great Plains Dairy Consortium (SGPDC), based out of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and hosted by Clovis Community College in Clovis, New Mexico, was designed with that mission. The program has rapidly grown in student participation since its inception in the summer of 2008.

I was born on a small farm in Southwick, Massachusetts, where we have raised some beef, but mostly Spotted Draft Horses. My parents own an auction company so we travel around New England and New York, conducting farm dispersals. My grandparents own Laurelbrook Farm in East Canaan, Connecticut, and milk upward of 850 head of Holsteins.
